Homeschooling In Nevada

How to File For Homeschool in Nevada

If you’re new to homeschooling, the process can feel overwhelming. One of the first things you’ll need to do is notify the state that you plan to homeschool. The good news? If you live in Nevada, I’ve put together this step-by-step guide to make the process as simple as possible.

First, go to the Nevada Department of Education website. At the top of the page, click “Offices” and select Office of Career Readiness, Adult Learning, and Education Options (CRALEO).

Once you’re on the CRALEO page, click “Homeschooling.” This section contains everything you need to know about homeschooling in Nevada.

To notify the state that you’re homeschooling, you’ll need to submit a Notice of Intent and an Educational Plan to your school district. Scroll down to Forms and select School District Homeschool Contact List. A PDF will open with contact information for every Nevada school district. Find your district and choose whether you’d like to submit your documents by email or mail.

Next, complete the Notice of Intent. Be sure all of the information is accurate and up to date. In most cases, you’ll only submit this form once. You’ll only need to file a new Notice of Intent if your child’s or parent’s name or address changes, or if your child returns to homeschooling after attending public school.

You’ll also need to create an Educational Plan. This plan should outline what you intend to teach in each of Nevada’s required subject areas. When I completed ours, I used the Nevada Educational Content Standards as a guide. I reviewed the standards and created a list of the skills I planned for my child to learn during that homeschool year. Like the Notice of Intent, you generally do not need to submit a new Educational Plan every year. The plan you create is for the year you initially file your paperwork.

Once both documents are complete, send them to your district’s homeschool contact using the information from the School District Homeschool Contact List.

In my experience, I’ve received a confirmation receipt within about three business days. Be sure to save that receipt for your records.

I hope this guide helps make starting your homeschool journey in Nevada a little less overwhelming.

Happy homeschooling!
